The Best Gift You Can Give Your Child
It is no surprise that
children love the newness of objects just like the rest of us. When children
play together they often prefer the toy of the child next to them above their
own, just for the sake of discovering something new and exciting. When the
holidays roll around and kids are asked what they would like, most of their
requests are for toys or games. Creative play and toys are a major part of
healthy child development and there is no harm in buying them, however why not
steer their focus and expectation on their experience instead? Sure, sometimes
we take our kids on outings to celebrate their birthdays, but often times the
anticipation lays on that cool item that they have been talking about for
months.
Have you ever bought someone
tickets to a show or movie as a gift? Well, this is the same idea but with the
intention of instilling value on experience. This year for my son's birthday,
there are a couple of fun toys his grandparents are getting for him, but one
gift my husband and I are really excited to give him is a semester of art classes.
The key to experience gift giving is to listen to and observe the things that
make your child’s face light up. We all have an idea of what our children’s
interests are, so with this knowledge we can work experience into their gifts. By
enrolling your child in a sport or an activity, you are helping them to
understand that gifts go beyond things that they can hold; they are memories that
may last much longer. One of the best gifts you can give to your child is an
unforgettable experience.
That is a great idea. it also shows them that those things ARE gifts rather than entitlements. I don't think most kids realize the gift their parents provide by paying for and chauffeuring to their activities.
ReplyDeleteYou make a great point about entitlements Crystal. I appreciate your input. Glad to see you stop by the blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful gift to give a child and the memories of such a gift will last a life time. If only more families thought this way!
ReplyDeleteI just gave my husband 8 tickets to a concert that he could share with his friends. It was a band that he really loves, not really my thing, but he asked me to use one of his tickets! That felt so good to be included! We had a great time! Visiting from Blog Meets Blog on FB!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I love to give these kinds of gifts of experience as well.
ReplyDeleteThank Jen. I am glad we share this believe.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it did Terri. Thanks for stopping by from Facebook.
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks Mary.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea for a gift! I always like enrolling my kids into activities, but I love the idea of
ReplyDeleteIt as a gift for a birthday!
I love this concept! Too often we focus on the material items and forget to be mindful and in the moment. Experiences are gifts in themselves and I am so happy to read that you are treasuring these moments with your children. This will lead to a rich life of fulfillment and that is something I want my child to have as well. Thank you for this post!

This is a great idea. I tried this last Christmas by buying my daughter an easel. I wanted to buy her more than just toys that she'd play with for a little while and forget about. Now she uses the easel to draw, practice her school work, and play "teacher." She uses it way more than all of the other toys she got and benefits from it more too.
ReplyDeleteWow, sounds like the easel has served multiple purposes and has really grown with your daughter. That is so wonderful Irion!
ReplyDeleteJacquelyn, so happy you can relate to wanting to instill some of the same values in your child. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Katie! I think planning for the activity will be part of the wonderful experience too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful idea. Toys and games are fun, but it is nice to be able to explore the world with your child. They can learn so much by going to museums, concerts, and traveling to different places.
ReplyDeleteThose are all great points Adrienne! Those experiences enrich children's lives forever.
